A campaign group has finally won its two-and-a-half-year battle to have a vehicle activated traffic sign installed on a dangerous main road in Shamley Green.

” A campaign group has finally won its two-and-a-half-year battle to have a vehicle activated traffic sign installed on a dangerous main road in Shamley Green.

The sign was installed in Church Hill earlier this month in a bid to reduce traffic speeds as Surrey County Council agreed to the Shamley Green Traffic Calming Village Society’s demands.

Residents have long complained about drivers not complying with speed limits through the village, especially at the top of the road where the Montessori Nursery is located.

Shirley Aldworth, the nursery’s manager, said: “Our concern has been for children and parents crossing daily on a road that drivers don’t stick to the speed limit. I don’t think they are aware that people are crossing it on a regular basis.

“This has been a very long time in coming and we are hoping that now, by raising awareness, the traffic will start to slow down.”

The society has said that roads have been narrowed and gateways placed at the entrance to the village. Road markings have also been removed and although this has divided opinion among villagers on its merits, the society says it has created a more “villagey” feel.

Society member Russ Fowler said: “Although it has taken some time to get commitment to budget and action, residents now feel that the main road is safer than it was.”

Surrey County Councillor Victoria Young, who became involved in the project 18 months ago, said: “It was a difficult balancing act to make sure we kept the village looking attractive.

“Now that it has finally been installed, there has been a noticeable difference and we are now seeing brake lights in the village for the first time in years.”
